Alexander by the grace of God king of Scots to the bishops, abbots, earls, barons, justiciars, sheriffs, provosts, officials, and all other worthy men of his whole land, greeting: Let present and future know that, moved by the loving kindness of God, we have given, granted, and by this our charter made firm to God and to Blessed Mary and to Saint Cuthbert, and to Thomas the prior of Coldingham, and to the monks serving God there now and in the future in perpetuity, the twenty yearly merks that we and our predecessors were accustomed to receive from Coldinghamshire as Waiting. For the same monks and their successors to hold, and receive, and have for ever in free, pure, and perpetual alms, as freely, quietly, fully and honourably, as the same monks freely, quietly, fully and honourably hold and possess any other alms. As witnesses: A(dam), abbot of Melrose, W(illiam) of Bondington, chancellor, W(alter) son of Alan, steward, justiciar of Scotia, P(atrick) son of Earl Patrick, John of Maxwell, chamberlain, Roger Avenel, David Marischal, Aymer of Maxwell, John of Stirling, William of Howden. At Berwick. On the sixteenth day of May. On the eighteenth year of the reign of the lord king.
