William, king of Scots, to the justices, sheriffs, provosts, officials, and all other worthy men of the whole of his land, greeting: Know that I have granted to God and to Saint Cuthbert at Coldingham and to the monks serving God there, that they and their servants shall be free and quit throughout the whole of my land from all toll on their own chattels and merchandise. I therefore forbid that anyone shall cause violence or injury to them against this liberty within my land upon pain of my forfeiture, just as the charter of King Malcolm my brother bears witness and confirms.
